NCI/NIH Budget Update

October 2007

“While the results will be far from ideal, this path provides the best way to dispose of the unfinished business quickly, and allow governors, state and local officials as will as families to finally plan for the coming year with some knowledge of what the federal government is funding,” a statement read issued by Rep. David Obey and Sen. Robert Byrd early in the first session of the newly elected Congress.

The House and Senate passed a continuing resolution enabling the federal departments and agencies to continue operating this year at fiscal year 2006 budget level extended by the new Democratic controlled Congress until late September, 2007. This was done in lieu of a proposed Bush Administration budget that was not passed by the previous session of Congress before it adjourned. The proposed 2007 budget dramatically slashed the budgets of the National Institute of Health and the National Cancer Institute, two federal organizations that fund hundreds of research projects and clinical trials for cancer patients.
