Richard A. Grasso

Richard A. Grasso
2001 Humanitarian Award

Richard A. Grasso received the first Cancer Survivors Hall of Fame Humanitarian Award on November 29th at Bayardęs in the Financial District of New York City.
Dick Grasso is a long time friend and supporter of the work of the Cancer Research and Treatment Fund. He served as Chairman and Master of Ceremonies for 30th Anniversary Dinner and has provided leadership in support of the efforts of CR&T to continue its fight against cancer. We honor him for his ongoing support of our efforts and for his community wide philanthropic role in encouraging improved health care facilities for our metropolitan area.
Mr. Grasso has been Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the New York Stock Exchange since June 1, 1995. Since 1988, he had been President and Chief Operating Officer. While continuing in those positions, he became Executive Vice President of the Exchange in 1991. He is the first member of the NYSEęs management to be elected to any of these positions in the NYSEęs 208-year history.
Mr. Grasso joined the Exchange in 1968. His responsibilities included Director of Listings and Marketing; Vice President, and then Senior Vice President, Corporate Services; Executive Vice President, Marketing Group; and Executive Vice President of Capital Markets.
Having been directly involved in the growth of the NYSE for over thirty years, Mr. Grasso is proud of his ¯partners˛ in the financial world. ¯The New York Stock Exchange,˛ he says, ¯has grown in its international recognition beyond the dreams of those of us who have been there for many years. But more important is what that membership engages in before 9:30 in the morning and after 4 in the afternoon. This is an extraordinary group of men and women who take off their uniforms of financial combat and put on their cloaks of public service.˛
¯The New York Stock Exchange on one hand is each day receiving more media focus than the White House. On the other hand it is receiving very little Ä for the great and extraordinary things done by its members to support sick children and families in need, when a cop is shot or a fireman is hurt.Ä When there is a cause that needs that bridge of assistance, this membership, this community of 11 Wall Street is always there.˛
Mr. Grasso follows his partners in giving himself to service to his community. He serves as Vice President of the National Italian American Foundation, trustee of the Centurion Foundation, New York City Police Foundation, a trustee of the Trooper Foundation for the State of New York, and is a member of the New York City Public Private Initiatives, Inc. He serves on various board and foundations as well.
We honor him for his support of Cancer Research and Treatment and for his unselfish philanthropy to the community.
