Inductees - Geraldine Ferraro, Fran & Jack Dalessandro
Humanitarian Award - Ken Langone
The Cancer Research and Treatment Fund honored four persons at the 2003 Hall of Fame Diner Dance at the Tavern on the Green on October 8. Our Survivors Hall of Fame inductees included Congresswoman Geraldine Ferraro, and Fran and Jack Dalessandro. Our Humanitarian Award was presented to Ken Langone at the black tie affair. Dick Grasso, Chairman and CEO of the New York Stock Exchange, served as dinner chairman.
Geraldine Ferraro was the first woman major party candidate for Vice President of the United States in 1984. Ferraro was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 1998 when she began thalidomide treatments. Since that time, her plasma cancer, one that erodes the bones, has remained chronic. She has been a spokesperson for the Multiple Myeloma Foundation and an outspoken advocate at congressional hearings for increased federal research grants for cancer research.
Fran and Jack Dalessandro, currently enjoying retirement living in Florida, both have been stricken with cancer and each was honored as a cancer survivor. Fran is a long time employee of the May Company, leaving the company when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Jack, a partner in a New York Stock Exchange brokerage company for more than 30 years, was also diagnosed with cancer. Both are under treatment but have survived their ordeals for more than ten years.
Kenneth Langone received our 2003 Humanitarian Award. Entrepreneur and philanthropist Langone is the founder, chairman and CEO of Invemed Associates, LLC, a New York brokerage and investment banking firms. He is probably best known as the co-founder of Home Depot and for taking Ross Perot's Electronic Data Systems Corporation public in the 1960's. His service on the boards of the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation, the Children's Oncology Society (Ronald McDonald House) and the Robin Hood Foundation enhances the work of researchers and medical delivery to all segments of our metropolitan community and beyond.
We are pleased to welcome these honorees into our Hall of Fame. Each of our survivors represents the strength and determination that is personally required to overcoming the fear and often pain associated with cancer. Our Humanitarian has dedicated his personal resources and energy to helping to eradicate cancer. We thank them and honor them.
