Improving Cure Rate for Early Disease CALGB 9633: A phase-III trial of adjuvant chemotherapy after resection for patients with non-small-cell carcinoma of the lung. As many as half the patients at clinical stage I, and 30 to 40 percent of those at surgical stage I, relapse following resections of non-small-cell lung cancer. The study follows upon recent successes with taxane-platinum combinations in improving the response rate and survival of patients with advanced disease and the cure rate in patients with locally advanced disease -- results that suggest a higher cure rate can be achieved for patients with early disease. The current study tests this hypothesis in a randomized prospective trial. Sponsor: Cancer and Leukemia Group B (CALGB) Principal Investigator: Dr. Scott Wadler 0197-671
Iressa for Advanced Non-Small Lung Cancer An expanded-access clinical program with ZD1839 (Iressa) for patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer. Iressa is a recently developed oral drug that blocks the epidermal growth factor receptor (a structure found in large amounts on the surface of many kinds of cancer cells) and thereby prevents a series of chemical reactions that cause the cell to grow and divide. Iressa is a viable alternative for non-small-cell patients with stage-IV disease and prior unsuccessful chemotherapy. The drug has limited side effects and good results in stabilizing disease, although it is not a cure. Closed to accrual. Sponsor: Astra-Zeneca Principal Investigator: Dr. Roger Keresztes 0201-606
Chemotherapy Plus Targretin Against Advanced Disease A randomized phase-III trial in which two standard chemotherapeutic agents, carboplatin and paclitaxel (Taxol), are given to one group of patients, and the same drugs in combination with Targretin are given to a second group of patients. Targretin selectively activates a group of cellular receptors that initiate programmed cell death (apoptosis), by which the body rids itself of unwanted cells. This study is for patients with advanced or metastatic non-small-cell lung cancer who have not received chemotherapy.
