MELANOMA

Epothilone Against Stage-4 Malignant Melanoma
NCI 4470: a phase-II trial of epothilone against stage-IV malignant melanoma. Epothilones are a group of new drugs that help keep cancer cells from multiplying and have proved effective against cancers that resist conventional chemotherapy.
Consortium study: NYU (suspended due to toxicities), North Shore (distributed), Weill Cornell (open), Montefiore (distributed)

CCI-779 Against Metastatic Melanoma
NCI 29: a phase II study of CCI-779 against metastatic melanoma. CCI-779 is a new drug that appears to block the production of proteins essential for cancer-cell proliferation.
Consortium study: Weill Cornell (open), NYU (distributed), Mt. Sinai (distributed), North Shore(distributed), Montefiore (distributed).

Chemotherapy and Interferon
CALGB 500002: A phase III trial comparing two regimens in patients with high-risk melanoma: high-dose interferon-alfa-2b versus the combination therapy of cisplatin, vinblastine, and dacarbazine plus interleukin-2 and interferon. Interferon is an anti-viral chemical produced by the body that has been used with some success against cancer.

Therapies Following Surgical Resection
A randomized, placebo-controlled, phase-III trial for patients with "no evidence of disease" after complete surgical resection of locally advanced or stage-IV melanoma. The study compares four regimens: 1) peptide vaccination combined with an agent called GM-CSF that boosts production of white blood cells; 2) peptide vaccination plus GM-CSF placebo; 3) peptide vaccination placebo plus GM-CSF; 4) peptide vaccination placebo plus GM-CSF placebo.
