Problem
and Opportunity:
Cancer is a deadly many headed enemy that cannot be felled by a
single magic bullet... or bullets. There is no single cure for the cancers
that plague us. They are too many and too varied. Each must be conquered
individually. The popular media may give us hope by reporting on drug
breakthroughs ...on "spectacular" developments ... on new discoveries.
But those who know -- the doctors, nurses, and researchers -- understand
that the test tube phenomenon of the laboratory is not easily or practically
transformed into the cure of cancer in human beings.
The battle is not so easily won. A three-way alliance exists in the cancer
battle: the medical caregivers, the CR&T researchers and the cancer
patients. These represent the millions of patients, today and in the future,
who will benefit from CR&T's sponsorship of the relentless daily battle
with cancer. There are immediate benefits for them from recent basic research,
new chemotherapeutic and immocosical drugs being evaluated through clinical
trials and the utilization of new surgical and radiation therapy techniques.
For almost forty years, Dr. Silver
and his dedicated group have focused their efforts on the relief of those
suffering now. They have concentrated on the hard work required to end
pain today and to find a cure for cancer tomorrow. But tomorrow is upon
us.
The 21st century is upon us and we still find that the causes of cancer
and its cure remain as elusive as they were yesterday. Important advances
have been made, but a plateau has been reached, a battlefield that must
be crossed before the ultimate wall of conquest can be scaled.
